​International Bacclaureate (IB): Language & Literature A

Our classes focus on giving each student individual attention and personalised feedback.

 

Since the classes are kept small (maximum 4 students), each student receives practices selected by the tutor based on the tutor’s assessment of the student’s needs.

Since 2021, Joelle has been teaching the IB Language and Literature A (HL & SL ) to students from various IB schools including ACS (I), ACS (Int), SJI, SJI (Int), Hwa Chong (Int), SOTA, and the Canadian International School. During these classes, she covers skills for paper 1, paper 2, Individual Oral (IA).

As a recipient of an MOE Overseas scholarship (undergrad) and the Post-Graduate scholarship, Joelle also coaches students on scholarship applications and university applications, such as the writing of personal statements for UCAS, scholarship interviews, etc.

Paper 1: Guided Textual Analysis

Students will learn to:

  • Identify and analyse key literary and visual devices across a range of text types

  • Practise past IB Paper 1 exam papers

  • Receive personalised feedback after each practice essay, with guided discussions on improvement strategies.

  • Review model essays after each practice

Having published various academic research papers, Joelle also coaches students on their Extended Essays (EE), teaching academic writing and research skills.

Having minored in philosophy at Oxford University, she also coaches students in Theory of Knowledge (TOK).

​As a student, Joelle also completed the IB Diploma Programme at ACS (Independent).

Individual Oral (Internal Assessment)

Students will:

  • Analyse literary and non-literary texts assigned by their school.

  • Prepare IO script by analysing a global-issue and explicating it with textual analysis

  • Practice the IO Q&A

Paper 2: Comparative Essay

Students will:

  • Study school-selected texts with focus on themes, characterisation, and authorial choices.

  • Build a consolidated bank of key quotations and analytical points for revision.

  • Practise past IB Paper 2 questions, learning how to plan, compare texts, and write analytically with strong evidence.
